Meet Dr. HanChanges in the Mouth That May Need Evaluation
Persistent Sores
A sore or ulcer that does not heal as expected.
Lumps or Bumps
A new swelling or growth on the gums, cheek, tongue or palate.
Red or White Areas
Patches of tissue that look different from the surrounding area.
Unusual Tissue Changes
Texture changes or areas that bleed easily.
Most changes in the mouth turn out to be harmless. Having an area evaluated is how you find out.
What Happens at the Evaluation
Dr. Han examines the area, asks how long it has been present and whether it has changed, and reviews your medical history and medications. Many areas can simply be monitored or treated directly.
When a Biopsy May Be Recommended
If an area needs a definite diagnosis, Dr. Han may recommend a biopsy: a small tissue sample removed under local anesthesia and sent to a pathology laboratory for examination under a microscope. A visual exam alone cannot diagnose most conditions, which is why the sample is examined.
After a Biopsy
You will receive aftercare instructions for the site. When the pathology report is back, Dr. Han reviews the results with you and explains what, if anything, is needed next.
