The Full Guide

Tiny antibiotic-filled particles, smaller than grains of sand, placed directly into a gum pocket after scaling and root planing. Think of it as a slow-release medication depot working exactly where the infection is, over about two weeks, rather than a pill that has to travel through your whole system.

Arestin delivers antibiotic medication directly into the infected pocket, rather than relying on a pill that spreads through your entire bloodstream to reach a small area, giving a more concentrated, targeted effect exactly where the bacteria are living.

Wondering if Arestin is right for your treatment plan? Book a consultation and we'll talk it through.

Before Your Appointment

Done at the same visit as scaling and root planing, once the pocket is cleaned. No separate prep needed for the Arestin step itself.

Anesthesia

No injection needed for the Arestin itself, though you may still be numb from the scaling and root planing done at the same visit.

What Happens

The powder is placed directly into the pocket with a small applicator. It sets into place and begins releasing medication gradually.

Right After

No pain at placement.

Days 1–10 (Critical Window)

Avoid brushing, flossing, or touching the treated area with your tongue or fingers. You don't want to disturb or dislodge the medication before it's done working. Avoid chewy, crunchy, or hard foods on that side, and skip interdental brushes or picks in the treated pockets.

After ~10 Days

Resume normal brushing and flossing of the area. Brush and floss everywhere else in your mouth as normal throughout. Just leave the treated pocket(s) alone for that window.

Call us if

you notice increased swelling, pain, or any signs of allergic reaction (rash, itching, difficulty breathing. The last would be urgent).

A note on this guide: this is general guidance. Your treating doctor's specific instructions for your individual case always take priority over anything written here. If something feels off or you're unsure, call us. Don't wait it out.
